“The Legend of Wild Humphrey Kynaston”
Alison gives a talk about Shropshire’s Robin Hood, with Glenn’s unsolicited assistance.
The sisters present known facts, recount stories of questionable authenticity, and race through an abridged version of a romaticised Victorian account about the notorious Tudor highwayman’s career.
Wild Humphrey Kynaston was born into a life of privilege and prosperity. However, his dissolute, spendthrift habits amassed such enormous debt that he took to robbing landlords’ stewards out collecting rent from tenants.
With a record of debt and robbery, which soon escalated to murder, Kynaston was outlawed by Henry VII and sought refuge in a cave at Nesscliffe.
From that time, he continued to remain a thorn in the side of landowners and sheriff’s posses, until rehabilitation eventually came after fighting for Henry VIII in France and receiving a Royal Pardon.
“Kiss Me, Hardy”
Thomas Masterman Hardy joined the Royal Navy at the age of 12 and survived a number of naval engagements which culminated in Trafalgar. He eventually left the Service as an Admiral and ended his career as Governor of Greenwich Hospital.
The Charnwood Sisters raise the profile of a neglected national hero, with Alison doing her best to present despite Glenn exceeding her role as powerpoint projector operator.
“The Lost Girls”
The Charnwood Sisters are “semi-rustic.” They’re urban girls who live in the countryside but know little about village green life.
The girls’ detachment from their rural environment is challenged when Glenn is asked to track down her niece, who has left home without her medication, leaving behind a cryptic list of landmark references which appear to map out the route she’s taking.
Meanwhile, Alison contemplates disappearing when lagging behind in a series of head-to-head rural issue pub quiz duels with a competitive rival, and agreeing to an ever escalating series of wagers.
The Sisters are forced to get to know the area on their doorstep very quickly in order to crack codes, and answer questions, keep the family together and defend family honour.
